A good book, a cup of hazelnut coffee, sitting on my little balcony/deck looking over the countryside through the fronds of three gorgeous hanging ferns, hearing the birds sing . . . It doesn’t get much better than that. Is everything going perfectly in my life? No. That’s a certainty. But enough is going right — and God’s got control of the rest! I don’t want to miss out on the beauty of these moments simply because life’s not perfect; simply because I choose to dwell on the problems rather than the fixer of my problems! Here is what Scripture say I should be dwelling on:
“ . . . whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
And when worry tries to distract me, I think about songs like one Kirk Franklin wrote, the chorus of which goes like this:
I know that I can make it
I know that I can stand
No matter what may come my way
My life is in your hands
And the Choir sings a song that is equally comforting – “Rest” – found on our Wonderful Peace recording. Some of its lyrics say:
There is no need for needless worry; with such a Savior, you have no cause to ever doubt. His perfect Word still reassures in any trial.
