Among the many hats I’ve worn throughout my life, one of the most significant has been the one labeled “Mom”. God’s gift of three wonderful children has brought immeasurable rewards into my life for many years. Of course, the knees of my jeans have been worn thin a time or two over those years as I interceded intensely on behalf of my children. But most of the time, tears of joy flowed freely as I saw the hand of God move in their lives – not the same way in each one, but in ways that were clearly identifiable and greatly appreciated, none the less.
As Mothers’ Day 2016 comes and goes, I want to share just one important concept I learned along the way in the area of parenting. I am no expert, for sure, but my children often tell me I need to write a book on the subject and that they and all their friends (who are now having children of their own) would eagerly read and heed the contents! That could be one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received!
The one concept I want to convey here is that of living out the priority of our faith in God in ways that our children can see and hopefully emulate as they grow older. It’s important for children to see how important our faith is to us. They need to see us praying, reading the word, and singing wholehearted praise at church. The topics of family conversation need to include how we live out our faith in practical, day-to-day ways. And decision making needs to reflect a strong consideration of God’s will, calling, and purpose in our lives. I’m not talking about living a “super-spiritual”, “holier than thou” life; but rather, a life that in a very real, down-to-earth way, places high value on honoring God.
Challenges to making our relationship with God a priority always crop up. But as our children see how WE handle those conflicts and revere God in the process, they begin to understand the privilege and rewards of putting God first.
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33 (NLT)
